Renminbi, Rupee included in ADB’s TFP
July 23rd, 2012
Noticing the expanding influence of the economies of China and India among the Asian economies, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) decided to encourage and support deals denominated in their local currencies under its Trade Finance Programme (TFP) as intra-regional trade transactions using the Renminbi and the Rupee are projected to increase.
It is a remarkable change as the TFP, hitherto, used to cover transactions denominated only in the US dollar, the Japanese yen and the euro.
On account of widening trade finance gaps, tight credit supply and tougher regulatory requirements, ADB has decided to extend the TFP for an indefinite period.
What is Trade Finance Programme (TFP)?
- TFP is a programme under Asian Development Bank with an objective to fill the market gaps for trade finance by providing guarantees and loans to banks to support trade. ADB collaborates with 200 partners to provide companies with the financial support they require to carry on import and export operations in Asia’s most challenging markets.
In how many countries is TFP active?
- It is active in 16 countries. Five most active countries are Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Vietnam
How will the move affect the trade scenario?
- The decision is expected to fill the market lacunae for trade finance by providing guarantees and loans to banks to support trade. It will promote the use of regional currencies in trade and reduce the dependency on the U.S. dollar as a settlement currency, which is not meeting the demand in several economies. Currently, 90 % of all foreign trade in Asia is settled in U.S. dollars, but this percentage is expected to shrink.

China now relies on American exports
July 22nd, 2012
A deteriorating Chinese economy, affected by a further slowdown, has become a cause of concern for the United States officials and the two presidential campaigns, as Chinese companies is showing grater dependence on exporting to the American market.
What is reason of China becoming so much reliant on American exports?
- The decline in the real estate and widespread layoffs in the construction sector, accompanied with lethargic growth in retail sales and falling exports to Europe has resulted into greater reliance on exports to the United States, the sector which is still little affected.
What has been the impact due to this?
- The increased export from china has resulted into rise in American trade deficit and that too in an election year. The bilateral deficit expanded 10.2% in the first five months of this year (2012). The deficit is expected to swell further. China is currently facing a slump in its growth. As per China’s official statement the country is growing at the rate of 7.6% which is much lower compared to the same period previous year when it was 9.5%.
How can this affect Presidential elections in U.S.?
- The rise in China’s exports to America has led to widening of trade deficit of the latter. This could adversely impact US economy. Further, increase in Chinese products selling in America will compete with US products and create pressure on them. The president administration is already under constant pressure from labor unions to take a more opposing stance toward China on trade. All these issues can become crucial in campaigns in presidential election.

U.S. approves “Truvada”
July 21st, 2012

What is Truvada?
- Tenofovir/emtricitabine, trademark Truvada by Gilead Sciences.
- Truvada is an anti-HIV drug.
- It is a fixed-dose combination of 2 antiretroviral drugs (Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate and Emtricitabine) used for the treatment of HIV. By blending the 2 antiretroviral drugsinto one tablet, it cuts down the pill load and enhances conformity with antiretroviral therapy.
- Since 2004 it has been in use for the treatment of those already infected with the virus. However clinical studies showed that the drug could prevent people from contracting the infection.
- The drug could be a prophylactic measure for high-risk individuals such as those with HIV-positive partners — only when combined with sexual health counseling and the use of condoms.
Still what is the cause of concern for AHF?
- AHF is skeptic that if Truvada is used as a preventive medicine by infected individuals who have not yet been tested, it could result in formation of drug resistant strains. These strains might spread to their partners.
Producer Price Index (PPI): RBI proposes for PPI to measure inflation
July 21st, 2012
The Governor of RBI, D. Subbarao has mooted for a Producer Price Index (PPI) to measure the average change over time in the sale prices of domestic goods and services. Currently, it uses Consumer Price Index (CPI) and Wholesale Price Index (WPI) to aid in measuring inflation.
But WPI does not capture price movements of services and is also a hybrid of consumer and producer price quotes. CPI captures the prices of significant commodities at retail level but not at producer level.
What is PPI?
- Producer Price Index is the measure of the average change in selling prices received by domestic producers for their output over a period of time. The prices included in the PPI are from the first commercial transaction for many products and some services. It measures price changes from the perspective of the seller.
Advantages of having PPIs:
- Will be globally comparable
- Will not include hidden costs like shipping, taxes and other levies thus provides a much clear picture of inflation
- Will give a view of the economy’s efficiency in transferring goods and services from first level of transaction to other level.
Where do CPI and WPI fall short?
Loopholes in WPIs:
- Incongruent with global standards as most of the nations either use CPI or PPI
- Considers only goods and not services which is a huge part of our economy and can’t be neglected
- The rates are mostly captured from mandis or places of wholesale business. Hence they don’t include prices at household consumer level.
Loopholes in CPIs:
- Measures the change in the important commodities at the retail level but not at the producer level.
- The indices for rural labourers, agricultural labourers and industrial workers are badly targeted to be used for macro policy making.
- Started in January, 2011, it falls short of having sufficient history to aid data analysis and to be used as a sole headline measure of inflation.
- The prices determined at consumer level are affected by subsidies, sales and excise taxes and distribution costs.
Which one is better b/w CPI and WPI?
- CPI is still considered a better option over WPI as it gauges changes in the general price level of goods and services at the household level.

IMF’s World Economic Outlook Update hews down India’s growth forecast to 6.1%
July 21st, 2012
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) in its World Economic Outlook Update, chopped down India’s economic growth projection from 6.8 % to 6.1% in 2012.
This is the result of slowdown in external demand and deceleration in domestic demand. The slow in domestic demand has been attributed to capacity constraints and monetary tightening by RBI.
It also cut the 2013 gross domestic product (GDP) growth estimate as well to 6.5 % from 7.2 % projected earlier as it didn’t see the situation to ameliorate significantly by 2013.
The IMF also noted the slowdown in the economies of Brazil, China, and India.
As per Fund, several burgeoning market economies had also been affected by increases in investor-risk aversion and perceived growth uncertainty, which has led to equity price fall, capital outflows and currency depreciation.
IMF uses different procedure to gauge economic growth against the official Indian method. India determines its growth at real GDP at factor cost (excluding indirect taxes), IMF projects it at GDP at market prices (including indirect taxes).
